Tropical western Atlantic , common in Florida, Bahamas, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean. North to the Bermudas, even as far as New York, and ranging South Brazil to the major barrier for Caribbean fishes: the freshwater outflow from the Amazon. Found on shallow coral and rocky reefs to about 30m depth. The Grey Angelfish are usually in pairs and readily approach divers. Juveniles inhabit shallow patch reefs and grassy areas.
